Music Stars Lost in the year 2014

Inevitably, every year we lose some of our most talented and famous music figures. Let us pay tribute to those who have left the building. There are many more than those listed here. But this is a good start for pausing and reflecting.

Jimi Jamison
Jimi Jamison
Jimi Jamison was the lead singer for the band Survivor from 1984 to 1988. He died of a heart attack on Aug. 31, 2014. He was 63.
Michael Johns
Michael Johns
Michael Johns was an American Idol Season 7 Finalist. No official cause of death has yet been given, but sources say it was caused by a blood clot in his ankle. He died Aug. 2, 2014, at age 35.
Manny Roth
Manny Roth
Manny Roth (left) was the founder of the New York City club Cafe Wha? – where Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, and more played in their formative years. He died July 31. He was 95.
Johnny Winter
Johnny Winter
Johnny Winter was born Feb. 23, 1944. He was known for his lightning-fast blues guitar riffs, striking long white hair, and his collaborations with the likes of Jimi Hendrix and childhood hero Muddy Waters. He died July 16, 2014, at age 70.
Tommy Ramone

Thomas Erdelyi (aka Tommy Ramone) was born on Jan.29, 1949. He was the original drummer for the Ramones and the last surviving original member of the influential punk group. He died July 11, 2014 from bile duct cancer. He was 62.

Charlie Haden

Charlie Haden was born Aug. 6, 1937. He was a jazz musician best known for his long association with saxophonist Ornette Coleman and his signature bass lines. He died July 11, 2014, after a long illness. He was 77.
John Spinks of The Outfield
John Spinks of The Outfield
John Spinks (far right) was the guitarist/keyboardist and songwriter for the British band the Outfield. He died on July 9, 2014 after a long battle with liver cancer. He was 60 years old.
Bobby Womack
Bobby Womack
Bobby Womack was born March 4, 1944. He was a legendary soul singer whose career spanned seven decades. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. He died June 27, 2014, at 70 years old.
Teenie Hodges

Mabon Lewis "Teenie" Hodges was born Nove. 16, 1946. He was known for being a songwriter and guitarist for Al Green. He died June 22, 2014 of complications from emphysema. He was 68.
Gerry Goffin
Gerry Goffin
Gerry Goffin was born Feb. 11, 1939. He was a lyricist who wrote such hits as "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," "Halfway to Paradise," and "The Loco-Motion" with his then-wife Carole King. Goffin and King were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three years later. He died at his Los Angeles home on June 19, 2014, at age 75

Born Sept. 2, 1928, Horace Silver was a jazz pianist and composer. He died June 18, 2014, at age 85.

Casey Kasem was born April 27, 1932. He was one of the most famous voices on the radio from the '70's through to the 2000s, best known as the host of American Top 40. Kasem died June 15, 2014 after a long battle with dementia and Parkinson's. He was 82

James Victor "Jimmy" Scott (aka "Little" Jimmy Scott) was born July 17, 1925. He was a famous Jazz vocalist whose famous contralto voice was due to a genetic condition called Kallmann's Syndrome. He died in his sleep on June 12, 2014, at the age of 88.

JayAre of Cali Swag District
Cahron Childs aka JayAre (center) was a member of the rap group Cali Swag District. He suffered from sickle cell anemia and died June 6, 2014. He was 25.
Jerry Vale

Jerry Vale was born July 8, 1930. He was popular in the '50s and '60s as a romantic pop singer. He died May 18 at his home in Palm Desert, Calif. He was 83.
DJ E-Z Rock
DJ E-Z Rock
Rodney "Skip" Bryce, aka DJ E-Z Rock (right), was part of the hip-hop duo from Harlem known for the hit "It Takes Two." He died on April 27, 2014, at age 46.
DJ Rashad
DJ Rashad
DJ Rashad was born Oct. 9, 1979. He was a Chicago-based DJ known as a pioneer in the footwork genre. He died of a suspected drug overdose on April 26. He was 34.

Kevin Sharp

Kevin Sharp was born Dec. 10, 1970. He was a country singer, author, and motivational speaker. He died on April 19, 2014 of complications from past stomach surgeries and digestive issues. He was 43.

José Luis Feliciano Vega was born on July 3, 1935. He was a legendary Puerto Rican composer and singer of salsa and bolero music. He died in a car wreck on April 17, 2014. He was 78.

Jesse Winchester was born May 17, 1944. He was a musician and songwriter. A diverse and impressive list of artists have covered his songs over the years, including Joan Baez and the Everly Brothers ("The Brand New Tennessee Waltz"), Jimmy Buffett ("Biloxi" and "Defying Gravity"), and others. He died April 11, 2014 after a long battle with cancer. He was 69.

Peaches Geldof was born March 13, 1989. She was a TV presenter, the second daughter of Boomtown Rats rock star Bob Geldof and Paula Yates, and the wife of musician Thomas Cohen (of the British band S.C.U.M.). She passed away April 7, 2014, of a drug overdose. She was 25

Scott Asheton was born Aug. 16, 1949. He was the drummer for the Stooges. He died of an undisclosed illness on March 15, 2014, at age 64.
Bob Casale

Bob Casale was born July 14, 1952. He was the guitarist for the pioneering new wave band Devo. He died of heart failure at age 61 on Feb. 17, 2014.
Wayne Smith

Wayne Smith was born Dec. 5, 1965. He was a Jamaican reggae and dancehall musician best known for his 1985 hit "Under Mi Sleng Teng," which is regarded as the track that initiated the digital era of reggae. He died of a heart attack at age 48 on Feb. 17, 2014

Anna Gordy Gaye was born Jan. 28, 1922. She was a composer and songwriter and the elder sister of Motown founder Berry Gordy. She was also known for her marriage to Motown singer Marvin Gaye, which was the subject of his album Here, My Dear. She died at age 92 on Jan. 31, 2014, after years of declining health.

Pete Seeger was born on May 3, 1919. An American folk singer, activist, and prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, he died of natural causes on Jan. 27, 2014. He was 94.
Phil Everly
Phil Everly
Phil Everly was born on Jan. 19, 1939. He was one half of the Everly Brothers with his older sibling, Don Everly. The country/rock music duo became famous in the late 1950s for songs like "Wake Up Little Susie" and "All I Have to Do Is Dream." His cause of death was complications attributed to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (a combination of emphysema and bronchitis), brought on by a lifetime of smoking. Everly died 15 days prior to his 75th birthday on Jan. 3, 2014.
